Barred Porthole
Title:  Barred Porthole
Description:  For eons, there used to stretch from the GN main in downtown Minneapolis along an elevated "china wall" the "Railway Transfer" line which connected to the downtown Milwaukee Road yards, grain elevators along the west bank of the Mississippi, and the Railway Transfer yard. The tracks which crossed this wall passed under First Avenue, which crosses the bridge (a replica of the original) in the center of this photo. Alas, while the Railway Transfer tracks lingered while the Milwuakee yards and GN depot passenger tracks were torn up, it too finally vanished. Only a fragment of the "china wall" remains today, stretching from First Avenue to beside the downtown post office. Sad to say, the First Avenue portal is fenced in, but the wall can easily be accessed from the post office side. Hennepin Avenue crossed the suspension bridge in the background, a span which post-dates the demise of the trackage here.

The Mighty Bridge Jim Hill Built
Title:  The Mighty Bridge Jim Hill Built
Description:  This shot shows virtually all of the historic James J. Hill/Stone Arch bridge, a landmark in downtown Minneapolis ever since it was built in the 1880s to bear passenger trains across Old Man river. The truss bridge was installed in the 1960s due to a lock and dam project right next door, and was originally painted silver. Last passenger trains to cross were Amtrak's, which bade the span farewell in 1978. Burlington Northern coal trains and other freights used the span for a time, but by 1982 the rails were torn up. Today it carries trail users. The old Pillsbury A Mill is in the background on the left.

Northern Pacific Bridge Number 9
Title:  Northern Pacific Bridge Number 9
Description:  Here is Northern Pacific Bridge Number 9, as viewed from the bike path on the north side of the double-deck Washington Avenue bridge. The sign on the left says "North Coast Limited", a proud reminder of a glorious train on which you could enjoy delights such as the stop to wash windows at Livingston, Montana, and that delectable "great big baked potato". On a more sober note, in the left foreground on the "Bohemian Flats" side of the river are beams salvaged from the site of the 35W bridge, just around the river bend past the 10th Avenue bridge, where the crane is. On a more positive note, this span is included on the Twin City Model Railroad Museum layout. Their website is http://www.tcmrm.org/

Rails To Nowhere
Title:  Rails To Nowhere
Description:  These rails can be found on West Linden Avenue next to the site of the old Great Northern Lyndale Yard. Once part of a track that went to a long-vanished industry. On a lighter note, that is my own "motive power" -my bicycle- on the left.

A Tear In The Historic Fabric
Title:  A Tear In The Historic Fabric
Description:  Originally, County Road 15 paralelled the Dakota Rail line west right into downtown Mound. Junctioning with County 110 down at the Crow Wing State Bank (visible in the left background of this photo). However, a road project done after abandonment but before trail construction resulted in the loss of a good chunk of roadbed for the old Hutch branch when 15 was re-routed to a new junction with 110. How tracks could ever be re-installed at this location is anyones guess.

Going, Going ...
Title:  Going, Going ...
Description:  When I visit St. Boni in September of 2008, I hit paydirt with this still as-abandoned bridge which carried the Hutch branch ROW across County 92. For a photo of a Burlington Northern train crossing this span, go to http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=966312 Alas, due to clearance and other issues, the trestle was torn down a year later.

Pavers Where Rails Once Were
Title:  Pavers Where Rails Once Were
Description:  The portion of the Dakota Rail trail in Minnetonka Beach boasts pavers at each grade crossing. A somewhat eccentric (and money-consuming) frill in the opinion of this fan. Sure miss the tracks at this location. Was so cool to see the railroad threading between the houses like a thread through a needle ...

Beyond it the Hutch branch ROW ambles off westward through the weeds. Awaiting further trail development by Carver County's park system.

The Bridges Over Minnehaha Creek
Title:  The Bridges Over Minnehaha Creek
Description:  Located along the former M&STL mainline in St. Louis Park are these bridges which carried the dual main tracks over Minnehaha Creek. Now today they carry trail traffic. Railing in foreground is from the bridge on the still-alive former Milwaukee Road line. However, the Southwest Light Rail Transit line is planned to be built along the old M&St.L main. So one day rails will hopefully again adorn these bridges. Which ought to bear the weight of an LRT car with ease.

Title:  Crossbuck Yard Momento
Description:  In the yard of a house smack dab next to where the M&STL/CNW line from Hopkins to Norwood and points west crossed Sleepy Hollow Road by it's intersection with Fairview Street is this crossbuck. Now a yard momento. It's probably been here ever since the CNW tore up this portion of the line. Thank goodness whoever it was had the foresight to preserve it near it's old location rather than allow it to be scattered to the four winds.
