The Kenyon Trestle At Last! |
Description: |
Man have I always wanted to photograph this! Behold: Milwaukee Road bridge S-844B, still standing in 2012 after last being used in the late 1970s. Despite losing some of its decking at its eastern end, this span still pretty much looks like it did when it was part of the Milwaukee's Zumbrota branch. I can just see an SD-7 now tip-toeing across with a small string of cars ... |

Vintage CNW Or CGW? |

A grouping of ties remains on the right-of-way of the Chicago Great Western a dozen feet or so north of the former crossing of the CNW Winona-Rapid City line (now CP/DM&E). I wonder what vintage ties are these, CNW, or CGW? Regardless, here they are, still in place decades after abandonment. |

Wild And Overgrown Milwaukee |

Once upon a time this route brought money into the coffers of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific, but its final bankruptcy doomed the rails of the Zumbrota branch to abandonment in 1980. Here we are looking east down a sizeable chunk of grade you can find on Kenyon's southwest side along Red Wing Avenue. |

Here we are looking up the old CGW down at Second Street, looking north towards where the line once crossed over County Road 32 on a bridge. I wonder if the old railroad ties in the foreground were scrounged up from when CGW successor C&NW tore up the line? They are quite the ironic touch. |

Long, long ago the Chicago Great Western's premier Twin Cities to Rochester train "The Red Bird" once rolled on these rails going to and from Rochester during its first routing over the CGW main to the CNW at Dodge Center and from there to Rochester. Later it was moved to their roundabout line up through Red Wing to Randolph. Regardless, here is the grade of the northbound connection track to the former CNW at Dodge Center as it looks today. |

"Conrail Crossing" |
Description: |
Sometime in the mid-1980's, I was riding in the family car going north on Baker Road. At the grade crossing for the former Minneapolis & St. Louis main line, the gates came down. Northbound were two units running light, and the one in the lead in Conrail paint. Hence why I dub this former grade crossing-turned crossing of a rail trail "Conrail Crossing." |

Where Graffiti Bridge Once Stood |
Description: |
The small bridge decorated in graffiti that musician Prince made famous in the movie "Purple Rain" once stood here along the former main line of the Minneapolis & St. Louis railroad. Plans to widen Valley View Road in the early 1990s doomed both the bridge and the line because by then only one train -a Soo Line job using trackage rights negotiated originally by the Milwaukee Road- was using the former Louie to reach a malting plant in Shakopee, MN. Today a trail bridge has taken the place of the famous span. For a couple photos by John Hill of the span, go here: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/srchThumbs.aspx?srch=graffiti+bridge |

End Of Track On the CGW Connection |
Description: |
The Chicago Great Western main line through Rosemount had a connecting track which branched off and connected with the joint Rock Island/Milwaukee Road line a few miles to the west. Today on a stub of this line remains in operation to serve a customer on the former RI/MILW. Here is where it ends close to the intersection of Blanca Avenue and Bloomfield Path, two streets nestled in a post-abandonment residental development which wiped out a good chunk of the grade. (Some traces remain on the grounds of nearby U More park of the University of Minnesota, though.) The tank car is parked at the actual end of track; a patch of grade remains beyond it. The whole shebang is enclosed by a black wire chain link fence which required me to lift my camera above it to take this shot. |

Coming Out Of Gauge? |
Description: |
A view north along the ex-Milwaukee Road line into Minnehaha Park from down by the Longfellow House. Are the rails coming out of gauge up the way? I wish an F. Nelson Blount-type railfan would buy this bit of track from 46th Street to the Princess Depot and fix it up. That way special movements into the park could take place. |

North From The Parkway |
Description: |
A view up the old Milwaukee Road from the north side of Minnehaha Parkway. Note how one of the rails in the foreground is submerged by snowmelt; these rails haven't seen upkeep in years. |

Buried But Intact |
Description: |
The 46th Street grade crossing on the old Milwaukee Road line to Minnehaha Park is paved over but the rails are intact. No more grade crossing signs exsist here, however. The days of occasional movements of CP business cars to the park seem to be at an intermission at best, over at worst. |

Fix This! |
Description: |
The forlorn ex-Milwaukee Road line into Minnehaha Park has started to come out of gauge north of Nawadaha Blvd/Minnehaha Parkway. Fix this, somebody! |
