The Mighty Bridge Jim Hill Built  Contributor's Pick!
This shot shows virtually all of the historic James J. Hill/Stone Arch bridge, a landmark in downtown Minneapolis ever since it was built in the 1880s to bear passenger trains across Old Man river. The truss bridge was installed in the 1960s due to a lock and dam project right next door, and was originally painted silver. Last passenger trains to cross were Amtrak's, which bade the span farewell in 1978. Burlington Northern coal trains and other freights used the span for a time, but by 1982 the rails were torn up. Today it carries trail users. The old Pillsbury A Mill is in the background on the left.
