Old Soo Line Depot
Title:  Old Soo Line Depot
Description:  The first Soo Line depot in Colfax was this wooden structure. When time came for the new one to be built, instead of tearing down the old station, the Soo moved it across the main line, turned the building around, enlarged it, and used it as a crew bunkhouse and other duties before it entered private ownership as a residence. The station now is part of the Colfax Railroad Museum.

The Oldest RPO In Preservation
Title:  The Oldest RPO In Preservation
Description:  This is Omaha Road RPO 301. Built in the 1840s, this car is the oldest Railroad Post Office in existence. Suitable trucks have yet to be found or fabricated, so newer ones are currently under the car, but otherwise this baby looks as she did during her heyday. (The semi-trailer in the background is former Milwaukee Road.)

Description:  The Colfax museum has another wooden Soo Line caboose, #256. This baby is displayed on the west end of the museum grounds and also doubles as a place for storage, thus mixing the aesthetic with the practical. Note the old Colfax depot in the left background.

Love Those Soo F Units
Title:  Love Those Soo F Units
Description:  The train displayed on the Colfax module of the Colfax museum's HO scale pike sport this snappy Soo Line A-B F unit combo. I sure wish these babies were still rolling through Colfax today. So much snappier thank humdrum Canadian National SD70s.

Everything From Grain To Lumber In This Baby
Title:  Everything From Grain To Lumber In This Baby
Description:  Scott, the museum docent who gave me a tour of the Colfax museum on Labor Day 2017, told me this Soo Line boxcar could haul not only grain but also barley, oats, and even lumber! This boxcar once helped earn a bit of revenue for the Soo Line back in the day.

Title:  The Railroad Avenue Side
Description:  Here is a look at the Railway Street side of the new Colfax depot, now the museum building of the Colfax Railroad museum. Colfax is lucky to still have not only live rail but surviving depots and a train museum on or near their Railroad Avenue.

Delaware and Hudson And the American Freedom Train? Yes!
Title:  Delaware and Hudson And the American Freedom Train? Yes!
Description:  The Colfax museum has the largest collection of railroad china in the United States. Some of it is on display in the museum building, some of it is in storage, and some of it can be found in a Soo Line coach turned display car. I was pleasantly surprised to see these plates commemorating the D&H and AFT, respectively. Note also the Illinois Central and CNW dining car staff uniforms in the background.

I Caught Them At Last!
Title:  I Caught Them At Last!
Description:  I finally bagged the three units Progressive Rail was using on the ex-Minneapolis, Northfield, and Southern main from Lakeville to Northfield (their "Jesse James Line") before they were moved to the Wisconsin Northern, where their six-axle configuration came in handy on the lighter rail there. I wish #40 was leading, since she is the prize of the group--she also sported that number and wore the same paint job for the Minneapolis, Northfield, and Southern, but rather than trespass into the yard to get a head-on shot, I made do with what I had.

"Rocky Soo"
Title:  "Rocky Soo"
Description:  The Rock Island had a sizable stable of GP7s that later wound up on the Chicago and North Western and then shortlines like the Fox River Valley. This Rock Island geep was acquired by MTM from Wisconsin Central to become a Soo Line-painted unit for the Osceola line. Incidentally, the Rock used to send transfer runs from Inver Grove Heights, MN, to the Soo at Shoreham Yard in Minneapolis, and the run was dubbed the "Rocky-Soo". I have long nicknamed the 559 "Rocky Soo" because of this.

A "Capone" Car
Title:  A "Capone" Car
Description:  The Minnesota Transportation Museum has two Rock Island "Capone" commuter cars, so nicknamed because these venerable cars, which date back to "Big Al"'s era, lasted for a long time in Rock Island commuter service. Today they are equipped with tables and serve as a sort of snack/beverage area on Osceola & St. Croix Valley trains. Dig that train order signal they have at Osceola too.
