Back End Of The Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Historical Society Depot Museum
Title:  Back End Of The Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Historical Society Depot Museum

The lean-to was added on after the ELMHS acquired the second depot the Louie built in town. This being the structure which replaced the old wooden depot. The Morse Avenue Grade Crossing
Title:  The Morse Avenue Grade Crossing
Description:  Here is the ESL's grade crossing at Morse Avenue in Excelsior. How I loved to see rails and crossbucks return where they belonged to be: On a railway's ROW! Today you can ride on this line weekends, holidays, and the Thursdays when the Excelsior Farmers Market is in town. The Reborn Tootin' Louie
Title:  The Reborn Tootin' Louie
Description:  This used to be barren grade, then just a rail trail. Then in the late 1990's, the ESL was built. A sight for sore eyes to see, indeed! For a John Hill photo of a CNW Morton sub freight passing this location, go here: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=640512 We are looking upon the ESL from the Mill Street bridge with the Morse Avenue grade crossing just around the curve.

Steel Rail Oasis
Title:  Steel Rail Oasis
Description:  The ESL carbarn as viewed from the Mill Street bridge. To think that after the CNW pulled out of town this portion of the ROW was barren as a desert. Now look at it. Title:  Crossing The Avenue

"To Minneapolis" Once Upon A Time
Title:  "To Minneapolis" Once Upon A Time
Description:  The Twin Cities Rapid Transit streetcar line to Excelsior was double-tracked and crossed above the Minneapolis and St. Louis where the current bridge stands in the background. From the end of streetcar service in 1932 to 2001 the original bridge that used to bear the weight of trolleys like the 1239 carried automobile traffic until, alas, it was replaced.

Gate End View
Title:  Gate End View
Description:  TCRT 1239 is a "gate car" in that passengers boarded and detrained via the gated end you see here. Crewmembers had the option of boarding via a door up front. The 1239 no doubt once traveled the original streetcar rails to Lake Minnetonka between 1906-1932, when trolleys gave way to buses beyond Hopkins, MN.

Title:  Almost There
Description:  DSR hums towards the Water Street end of the Excelsior Streetcar Line. The parking lot in the foreground used to belong to a small officer building on Morse Avenue. Cars now park for the same building at a new one off to the left, leaving some "street" for the ESL to pass through!

On Some Street!
Title:  On Some Street!
Description:  The office building to the left put its parking lot right on the right of way of the CNW ex-M&ST.L. Morton sub after abandonment. Cars now park in the new lot to the right, leaving some "street" for ESL's treasures to traverse. Today Duluth Street Railways 78 does so as the crew takes their latest passengers up the line for a carbarn tour and then on to the Excelsior Blvd end and back to Water Street.

Title:  Old Streetcar On The New

Look Before You Cross
Title:  Look Before You Cross
Description:  Despite the RR crossing signs on Morse Avenue, crews on the Excelsior Streetcar Line always bring the car to a stop and see if the coast is clear before the appropriate bell signals are given and the car goes on its way. Here's Duluth Street Railways 78 stopped for the procedure.

Tour Stop
Title:  Tour Stop
Description:  While one passenger choses to skip it, DSR sits otherwise empty as the crew shows the rest of their fares around inside the ESL carbarn. According to the book "The Como-Harriet Story", DSR 78 is more a replication than a restoration because only half the original wood was re-used during the rebuild and the power truck is from Belguim. Nevertheless, she returned to her former glory and plied the Como-Harriet line until arriving at Excelsior in 1999.

Title:  The Depot Museum Is Now Dwarfed
Description:  The former Minneapolis & St. Louis Excelsior depot - whose opening was graced by the presence of the legendary Lucian C. Sprague himself - later became home to the Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Historical Society's museum, which now is dwarfed - incredibly - by a townhome development which got squeezed onto a narrow strip of nearby land.

Improving Safety In The "Street"
Title:  Improving Safety In The "Street"
Description:  The former parking lot which occupied the former Minneapolis & St. Louis right-of-way after the Morton Sub was abandoned from Hopkins to Norwood in 1980 later had the trail and the Excelsior Streetcar Line routed through it, thus giving the ESL crews some actual "street" to run their cars through, just like during the glory days of the Twin Cities Rapid Transit System. Safety improvement work was underway where the orange cones are when I snapped this picture on a breezy Thursday afternoon which began warm but was turning chilly by the time I snapped this photo. Note the defiant fall color on the trees in the middle background.

Vintage Pavers
Title:  Vintage Pavers
Description:  These aren't any ordinary pavers down at the Water Street end of the Excelsior Streetcar Line. These are vintage 1906 pavers which were laid along Water Street itself when the Twin Cities Rapid Transit Company extended their interurban line to Excelsior. They now form a path from the Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Historical Society's museum (located in the former Minneapolis & St. Louis depot) to the new Hennepin County Excelsior library. The ESL thus has a little more "street" to run their cars in, counting the former parking lot down at Morse Avenue to the east.
