261 Close Up 2005 Fall Color Excursion
Title:  261 Close Up 2005 Fall Color Excursion
Description:  Here is a close up view of 261, her AMTRAK Genesis consort, and the rest of her train as they leave the CP/SOO behind and enter the BNSF at downtown St. Paul. Sorry that tree there blocks 261's pilot a bit. Was kind of shooting on adrenaline by this point in the day. It had been a long wait!

The 261 Returning Home From 2005 Fall Color Trip
Title:  The 261 Returning Home From 2005 Fall Color Trip
Description:  A scene which simply reeks of the romance of the steam passenger train! Milwaukee Road 261 is returning home as dusk falls from the first 2005 fall color trips to Winona and La Crescent, Minnesota. Beauty on the rails, thy name is "steam locomotive". I especially like how I got 261's headlight in this shot as she began to swing onto the downtown St. Paul wye just east of the Union Depot.

261 On The Old Milwaukee
Title:  261 On The Old Milwaukee
Description:  Moved away from the telegraph poles for this closer look. The trips were operated from the old Milwuakee Road Bass Lake yard in St. Louis Park, and 261 and her train now have only a few miles left to go until reaching Bass Lake after passing this point. The day was incredibly hot, and normally I would have been at the beach. But miss good ol 261, on the old Milwaukee no less? No way!

The 261 Passing The Former M&St.L/CNW Hopkins Depot
Title:  The 261 Passing The Former M&St.L/CNW Hopkins Depot
Description:  I was inspired by a photo of SP 4449 (which can be found on this site) at the Hopkins depot with the American Freedom train to try a similar shot with 261. Granted, the Milwaukee (now Twin Cities and Western) tracks are way over on the right, and the old Louie (now a Three Rivers Park trail. Let's have the rails and 4449 back instead!) and depot on the left, but the same principal still applies. Depot has been a coffehouse since 1998. Today 261 is returning in reverse from a trip to Colonge in honor of it's 100th anniversary. A further trip from there to Glencoe was also done this weekend.

MILW 261 Wesbound
Title:  MILW 261 Wesbound
Description:  We are now westbound for Wayzata. We are approaching the pedestrian overpass at Bryn Mawer park on the outskirts of downtown Minneapolis. Note the Kenwood water tower in the upper left corner and the unkempt grounds to the left. It is the northern border of the site of Great Northern's Lyndale yard. Rumor has it a GN engine is buried under the ground here. Perhaps 261 might have a GN friend one day?

Title:  Crossing Minnehaha Creek
Description:  A vestibule-eye view of 261 as she leads her train to Minneapolis on September 9th, 2006. We are in the suburb of Minnetonka, and 261 is on the bridge over Minnehaha Creek by Big Willow Park. Further east the old GN main loops across the creek again.

Title:  Arriving at Minneapolis Junction September 9th, 2006.
Description:  We are crossing Harrison Street as we pull into Minneapolis Junction, and 261 is swinging onto the north leg of the wye at this location. As always, folks such as the gentleman on the street are out to watch the glorious passing of a steam train.

261 Pulling Out At Minneapolis Junction
Title:  261 Pulling Out At Minneapolis Junction
Description:  Having waited for a passing eastbound BNSF freight that had followed us from Wayzata, 261 swings out past the Harrison Street sign at Minneapolis Junction as we begin our return trip to Wayzata in another vestibule-eye view. Note the fans and riders in the "open coach" (a baggage car with the doors open and gates across the entrances) enjoying the show as we prepare to cross Harrison Street, and the contrast between the modern signals and a primo 1944 Alco 4-8-4!

The 261 In Minnetonka
Title:  The 261 In Minnetonka
Description:  Here is something unique: a dog interested in a steam train. Yes, his master is trespassing, but they were not harming anybody when we passed them this day and it made a quaint shot that smacks of the good old days before rail security went bonkers.

MILW 261 In The Rain
Title:  MILW 261 In The Rain
Description:  Some trains steam in the rain, others get wet. Seriously, this day a storm tracked farther north than thought, dousing the Twin Cities in a cold drizzle. Here 261 is returning from her afternoon run to Howard Lake, MN. on the new BNSF alignment in Long Lake due to the Highway 12 reroute. She is in reverse, but isn't that smoke plume gloriously white? The entire consist, including the BNSF GP60 on the hind end, is visible in this shot. I had only seconds to get this shot before closing up the camera to prevent droplets getting on the lense whilst standing under the Brown Road overpass.

The 261 By Wayzata Bay
Title:  The 261 By Wayzata Bay
Description:  After running in reverse from Minneapolis Junction, 261 arrives. Soon to retrace her steps into Minneapolis on the point of the first trip of the day. Back to Minneapolis Junction and return. She was in town for the annual James J. Hill Days festival, which this year marked the 100th anniversary of the old Great Northern Wayzata depot (out of view to the left of this shot). The water in the foreground belongs to lovely Wayzata Bay of Lake Minnetonka.

261 Resting
Title:  261 Resting
Description:  Milwaukee Road Alco Class S3 4-8-4 261 rests inside the old diesel house at Minneapolis Junction that now is her home on September 30th, 2006. My own "motive power", my bike, wound up getting into the shot in the left hand corner. 261 sure looks good, even when sitting still.

Incidentally, I was on the yet-to-open Highway 12 bypass for these shots. A fabulous vantage point. Viva the Milwaukee Road!

Skytop Obs First?
Title:  Skytop Obs First?
Description:  The 261 and the westbound fall color trip to Willmar nears the Old Crystal Bay Road overpass in Orono. It is interesting that the 261 was coupled up to the "Cedar Rapids" for the westbound leg of the Willmar trip. This doubtless was to allow the Amtrak unit to be on the hind end due to having to back up at Minneapolis Junction to gain access to the north leg of the wye there to access the Wayzata Sub. Note the spectators on the Willow Drive bridge at the upper left. Folks sure are well-informed about the 261! Who said people thought trains were boring?

The Traffic Resumes
Title:  The Traffic Resumes
Description:  Traffic on Highway 12 picks up speed again as the 261 fall color run to Willmar leaves Old Crystal Bay road behind it. Just visible in the upper right corner are a motorcyclist and an auto using the shoulder to get a better look at the 69 year-old Class S-3 Alco as Steve Sandburg and comapny work their magic. I bet even the State Patrol would let those shoulder-hugging motorists slide, considering the distraction they were contending with!

Willmar Bound!
Title:  Willmar Bound!
Description:  Steve Sandburg and company have their venerable 1944 Alco burning a fire in her grates that sent a white plume into the air as they wheeled the 2013 fall color trip to Willmar over the BNSF Wayzata sub on this crisp October morning. Here the 261 is passing signal 164. Ahead of the train lies the Louisiana Avenue overpass. I was the only railfan perched up here, happy to report! A dude going south on Louisiana honked his horn in appreciation for the train as it thundered underneath too.

Next Stop Willmar
Title:  Next Stop Willmar
Description:  The Friends of the 261's fall color jaunt to Willmar heads for Maple Plain and all points west to Willmar as the train thunders west paralell to US Highway 12. Note the bold souls in the upper right corner who actually pulled off the highway illegally! I think a State Trooper might not have granted those ralilfans a pass if a trooper happened along, train or no train. Some railfans catch all the breaks.

One Way To Fix Being Back Lit
Title:  One Way To Fix Being Back Lit
Description:  I like sunny days for photography, but it stinks when you have to compensate for back lighting. Fortunately, the 261 was sending such a massive smoke plume into the air, it blocked out the sun if you stood just right. Thus, while I had to adjust the light setting on my Olympus Accura so the picture was not overly lit, I had indirect help from the 261's crew.

Steam Engine And A Rent A Cop
Title:  Steam Engine And A Rent A Cop
Description:  The crew of the 261 backs the first "North Pole Express" of the day down SPUD's tail track a little. The SPUD rent a cop was quite vigilant as he patrolled the grounds, warning off a couple fans (including me) as to how wandering on federal property was a no no (he didn't arrest anybody, happy to relate).

Echoes Of Steamtown, 1996
Title:  Echoes Of Steamtown, 1996
Description:  When I was fifteen, I read in "Railfan & Railroad" and "Trains" about the 261's winter trips out of Steamtown NHS in Scranton, PA. This pic of the 261 at SPUD echoes those trips, at least to me.

Keeping Pace With The 261
Title:  Keeping Pace With The 261
Description:  The 261's crew slowly gets a wheel into their train as their iron horse exhales large clouds of steam. Meanwhile, two fans (at least one of whom is also an event volunteer) keep pace with the train.

Steam On A Gloomy Day
Title:  Steam On A Gloomy Day
Description:  I was playing with the light setting on my Olympus Accura with this one. By dimming the light setting, I captured how gloomy the skies the 261 was steaming beneath were.
